The General Assembly of the Japanese Parliamentary Committee for a World Federation was held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 20th anniversary of the World Federation Parliamentary Resolution. (6/3/2025)

On Friday, March 6, Reiwa 7 (Friday, March 6, 2025), from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the General Assembly of the Japaneses Parliamentary Committee for World Federation was held in the International Conference Room on the first floor of the House of Representatives First Members’ Building to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 20th anniversary of the World Federation Parliamentary Resolution.

Following the retirement of the 17th Chairman of the Japaneses Parliamentary Committee for World Federation, Representative Seishiro Eto, Speaker of the House of Representatives Fukushiro Nukaga was inaugurated as the 18th Chairman and re-confirmed during the General Assembly. In addition, with the retirement of the former Secretary-General Masaharu Nakagawa, Representative Mari Kaieda of the Constitutional Democratic Party was approved and assumed office as Secretary-General.

Furthermore, the Committee Secretariat provided an explanation of last year’s activity report, the financial statements, and the proposed activity plan and budget for the current year. All items were approved unanimously with applause as presented in their original form.

Subsequently, Dr. David Chikvaise, former Director of the United Nations European Headquarters and former Chief of Staff, emphasized the importance of Japan’s contributions in a rapidly changing international society, the significance of multilateralism, and expressed his gratitude for Japan’s past contributions to international peacebuilding.

Representatives from various political parties also shared their views on the importance of the Japaneses Parliamentary Committee for World Federation in today’s international society.

From Sukehiro Hasegawa, Chairman of the Japan Advisory Commission on Global Governance—an advisory body of the Japaneses Parliamentary Committee for World Federation and former United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative—a draft of the World Federation Parliamentary Resolution was presented to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the resolution. The draft, intended to demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving lasting international peace and strengthening global governance centered on the United Nations on the occasion of the UN’s 80th anniversary, sparked a variety of discussions. At the General Assembly, it was resolved that further consultations, including with the Chairman and the Secretary-General, would be conducted to refine the draft.
